I took a bit of a hike of about 6 miles over fairly rough muddy terrain (I'm whinging) yesterday from Frgohall Birdge at the end of Conquest Drove, Farcet Fen, to the Yaxley side of the railway crossing over the Yaxley Lode (a wide ditch, a bit like a river). I Could have saved myself a walk if I had come in from the Yaxley end... However, that would have meant I would not have seen a couple of Short-eared Owls, three Peregrines, 50 Corn Buntings, 150 Stock Doves, 1,000 plus Lapwings, Kingfisher, 250 Golden Plovers and so on.
When I first saw the bird through the arch of the railway bridge, it was fishing in the ditch, but had moved up onto the back with some Mute Swans by the time I took the dangerous crossing, dodging 100mph trains. I got too close and it flushed and flew over to land near the Trundle Mere hide of the Holme Fen/Great Fen complex.

What a beautiful bird! It looks as if the swan is grooming it too.
